Consent 4 Kids

Kids with disabilities are at higher risk of being victims of sexual abuse. One way to reduce this risk is by starting education about consent, body autonomy, and safe touch early.

This new class will work on these skills with neurodivergent kids, ages about 3-7, and their caregivers. It is open to any children with Dane County CLTS waiver funding, and will take place on May 20th, 4:30-5:30 at Monona Public Library.

The Self-Compassionate Caregiver

Caregivers, whether paid or unpaid, have incredibly important roles in the lives of people with disabilities.  But it can be hard for many caregivers to show the same compassion to themselves as they do to the people they care for, and this is leading to more and more burnout.  This class will help caregivers identify their own needs and create plans for managing REAL, meaningful self-compassion and self-care that will enhance your relationships not just with yourself, but also with those you are caring for.  The class is ideal for anyone who provides care, whether it’s for a family member or as a professional or direct care worker, who wants to learn how to cope with the very valid struggles of being a caregiver.

This training is done in partnership with Waisman Community Outreach Wisconsin and all questions can be directed to mltruman@wisc.edu

Cost: $30

Experiencing Trauma as a Caregiver: Coping with Empathy Fatigue and “Secondary” Trauma – In Person Training

Many caregivers exhibit symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder from working with people who have experienced trauma themselves or witnessing that trauma as a caregiver.  In addition, it can be very difficult to manage these symptoms while also providing care for others and helping them to cope with their trauma symptoms.  We will take a deeper look at how trauma of someone we care about impacts our own nervous systems, how empathy fatigue (often referred to as compassion fatigue) can make it difficult to feel regulated and provide care and create useful plans and tools to address these symptoms so we can fully engage with the people we are caring for.  This class is ideal for anyone who provides care, whether it’s a family member or a social worker/direct care worker.

Cost: $30

Building Connections Together: Healthy Relationship Group for Neurodivergent Adults and Their Caregivers

Using grant funding, we have created a group for neurodivergent adults and their caregivers to learn more about what a truly healthy, safe relationship looks and feels like.  We will be running a six week educational workshop for neurodivergent adults to learn about healthy relationships, while simultaneously running a group for paid and unpaid caregivers to learn how to better support these relationships.

Why not just focus on educating neurodivergent adults?  Education doesn't happen in a bubble, and we can't expect people to make changes and practice what they learn if their environments and supports are not reinforcing this information.  Each adult will be required to have at least one caregiver (parent, guardian, family member, respite provider, home staff, or other support person) attend a separate weekly training to learn what they can do to support healthy relationships and sexuality.

Neurodivergent group meets Mondays 4:30-5:30 on Google Meet starting March 11th, for six weeks.
Caregiver group meets Wednesdays 4:30-5:30 on Google Meet starting March 13, for six weeks.

Requirements:

  • Neurodivergent adult, 18 and older, living in Wisconsin

  • ND adult has Medicaid (this will not be billed, but is a requirement of our grant)

  • 1-2 caregivers, paid or unpaid, who can attend all six caregiver trainings

  • Access to Google Meet and internet connection

  • Caregivers and ND adults will need to complete pre and post group questionaires, as a requirement of our grant funding

To register, please complete our registration form and we will reach out to you within 2 business days to confirm.

The Double Rainbow: The Intersections of Gender Identity and Neurodiversity

February 13, 2024 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am
UW South Madison Partnership, 2238 South Park Street, Madison, WI 53713

Research has shown that rates of LGBTQIA+ identification in the neurodivergent community are higher than in the general population, but little is done to provide increased and inclusive supports to them or to better understand their unique needs.  And given trans and gender non-conforming youth are at a much higher risk of depression, anxiety, and suicide, it is important for caregivers to have tools to assess and accommodate different needs and create inclusive environments at home, in the community, at work, and in school.  We will discuss current research on intersections of neurodivergence and gender identity, the impact on mental health and safety, understanding different terminology, and identifying concrete strategies to build more inclusive, safe, and empathic supports.

Objectives:

  1. Identify terms related to sexual orientation and gender identity

  2. Understand the research and faults of the research regarding neurodivergence and gender identity

  3. Identify the increased risk factors for overlapping intersections, including mental health needs and safety

  4. Identify strategies for supporting LGBTQIA+ Neurodivergent youth and adults

  5. Explore your own values and reflect on how they may impact your support of neurodivergent LGBTQIA+ communities.

Cost: $30

Trauma, Brains, and BIG Emotions: Providing Trauma-Informed Support to Neurodivergent Kids, Teens, and Adults – In Person Training

Many approaches to “behavioral challenges” focus heavily on “eliminating a behavior” rather than understanding the purpose of an action.  Trauma can impact our brains and nervous system’s ability to differentiate between safe and unsafe situations, which can result in some emotions and actions that may seem baffling, but are often the body trying to keep someone safe.  When caregivers are able to respond in regulated, empathic ways we are more likely to see trauma victims heal, connect, and regulate.  In this training, caregivers will learn about the neuroscience of the impact of trauma, concrete strategies for connection and co-regulation, and how to move away from “behavioral support plans” toward a more trauma-informed model of support.

Sexting, Porn, and Online Dating, Oh My! Empowering Neurodivergent Teens and Adults in Safe Online Experiences – In Person Training

The internet can feel scary, and a caregiver’s response can often be to limit access to technology in an attempt to keep someone safe.  However, to move away from a protective model and toward an empowered model, we need to talk about these topics and support neurodivergent kids, teens, and adults in making safe decisions online for themselves.  Caregivers will learn about safe ways to explore use of technology in seeking pleasure or finding dating partners, how to respond to use of technology in empathetic and positive ways that do not create shame, moving away from use of punishment, and what to know about laws regarding these topics.

Wait, You Want Me to Talk About SEX? Getting Comfortable Having Uncomfortable Conversations About Sexuality with Neurodivergent Kids, Teens, and Adults – In Person Training

Very few neurodivergent kids, teens, and adults get comprehensive, evidence-based sex education that is responsive to their own learning style and needs.  This puts many at risk of sexual exploitation, unwanted pregnancies, and STD’s.  In this training, we will discuss ways to have conversations about sexual health; supporting someone’s sexual orientation and/or gender identity; and identifying, setting, and respecting sexual boundaries.

Respect Starts at Home: Teaching Neurodivergent Kids, Teens and Adults About Consent – In Person Training

  • UW South Madison Partnership (map)

The first place we learn about relationships is in the home, but too often kids, teens and adults with disabilities are not given opportunities to say “no”, set boundaries, or practice healthy relationship skills.  By modeling consent and respecting boundaries at home, kids and teens will come to expect this in their other relationships too, increasing safety and assertiveness skills.  Caregivers will learn about what consent truly looks like, how to respond when someone sets a boundary, how to model asking for consent, and concrete strategies for teaching assertiveness skills and consent at home and in the community.
